FAQ’s

Is it just like school classes?
ACAD’s Education Programme differs in its approach from that of mainstream school.  Where the mainstream environment or approach is not working for the young person, we introduce an approach to re-engage the pupil in the learning process.  Instead of large classes they will be in smaller, more intensive classes – often working one-to-one with the Tutor.  The Tutor will mostly go to them and work in a designated educational space.  The school hours are from 9.30am to around 3.30pm Monday to Friday, unless other appointments have been arranged, e.g. work experience or other education service.

Will my child be studying the same things?
They will be studying broadly the same areas that are taught in school but in a different way.  Tutors will make classes as interesting as possible using games, computers and other approaches to make learning fun and enjoyable.  We believe in a very ‘hands on’ approach to learning – learning by doing.

Does my child have a say in his/her education?
Yes, they do!  We work closely with your child in developing their very own timetable and in setting individual targets.  We believe in encouraging interests and developing the child’s abilities.  If there is something that your child shows particular interest in, e.g. woodwork, we will build more of that subject into his/her timetable so that they can develop their knowledge and skills in that area.

What if he/she doesn’t like elements of the education?
Our Education Team’s primary function is to support your child to achieve as much as they can.  We want them to be all they possibly can be.  There is time given at the end of each day for reflection and evaluation.  This is a time set aside each day for your child and his/her Tutor to look at the events of the day and discuss progress.  He/she can also talk to any of our trained Care Team who will do their very best to help, as will Managers, and Social Workers.

Can the qualifications my child gains useful for their future?
They most certainly are!  Your child will either leave with, or be working towards, nationally recognised qualifications within the Scottish Qualifications Framework.  Your child will be able to take their qualifications with them to access further education, and a lot of employers use the same type of qualifications to train their own staff.
