SHANARRI

Applied Care and Development (ACAD) believes that all children and young people should have the same opportunities open to them and should be encouraged to grow and develop through a nurturing environment.

GIRFEC promotes action to improve the wellbeing of all children. Eight areas of wellbeing have been identified as areas in which children and young people need to progress in order to do well now and in the future.

At ACAD, we want young people to be successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens. We use SHANARRI to support children and young people to be:

  • Safe: Protected from abuse, neglect or harm at home, at school and in the community
  • Healthy: By having the highest attainable standards of physical and mental health, access to suitable healthcare, and support in learning to make healthy and safe choices
  • Achieving: Being supported and guided in their learning and in the development of their skills, confidence and self-esteem at home, at school and in the community
  • Nurtured: Having a nurturing place to live, in a family setting with additional help if needed or, where this is not possible, in a suitable care setting
  • Active: Having opportunities to take part in activities, such as play, recreation and sport that contribute to healthy growth and development at home and in the community
  • Respected: Having the opportunity, along with carers, to be heard and involved in decisions that affect them
  • Responsible: Having opportunities and encouragement to play active and responsible roles in their schools and communities and where necessary, having appropriate guidance and supervision and being involved in decisions that affect them
  • Included: Having help to overcome social, education, physical, and economic inequalities and being accepted as part of the community in which they live and learn

At ACAD we use SHANARRI in all aspects of our planning and assessment. We focus on an outcome-led rather than an input-led or output-led approach to addressing the needs and concerns of children and young people.

Curriculum for Excellence

Curriculum for Excellence is about bringing life to learning and learning to life. It has been introduced to raise standards of learning and teaching and help improve our children’s life chances.

At ACAD we focus on the importance of young people attaining the required knowledge and skills necessary to have successful, healthy and happy lives. We offer a broad and deep general education, promoting the ability to learn a skill for life that will help young people go on to further study, to secure work and to navigate through life

We bring real life into the classroom and take lessons beyond the classroom. We practice the aims of supporting young people in every way possible so that they can fulfil their potential and make the most of their opportunities.

All staff at ACAD are responsible for a young person’s health and wellbeing and identifying the personal support they need on a day-to-day basis

Our staff work together to plan a child’s ‘learning journey’. We ensure young people can learn in a way that works for them, at a pace they can cope with and with enough challenge to stretch them. Staff support young people as they move up from primary on to secondary and beyond into further training and opportunities for employment.

Ultimately, our aim is to improve young people’s achievements and life chances, to nurture successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors, and responsible citizens.
